Hi All,
I am organizing a poetry event at Oldbury Library in the West Midlands on 28th November 2014 between 2-4.30pm in aid of the Ebola Crisis Appeal. Two Poet Laureates are appearing to grace us with their brilliant black country poetry as is a number of local poets and singer song/songwriters that also writes fantastic poems. I am looking forward to the event but rather nervous as this is the first time I have organized something on this scale. It is free to come and listen and there will be a slot at the end where the public can come and join in and recite a poem of theirs too. Refreshments will be available...now this is where any money raised will be coming from; so if you are free and would like to come and join in don't forget to bring a quid with you and have a cuppa and a cake. The more we sell in ways of tea and coffee and in cakes and cookies, the more we will make for the charity. There are too many people suffering from this dreadful disease and it needs to be contained before it gets any worse. Together we can do our little bit to help. Just think a cuppa tea and a cake to you is the possibility of survival to someone else. So come, enjoy the poetry and enjoy your hot drinks on a cold day.

Hi All,
I have found recently that I know of more writers than I thought I did. There are friends of friends, family of friends. It just goes to show how secluded we writers can be at times. Most people may say that it is because writing is a lonely job. To some extent it may well be. I take my hat off to all those writers out there that write in groups or pairs, that is something that I don't think I could do. I don't actually find writing as lonely and I don't think many other writers do either. We have our characters to keep us company. I was once asked if I wanted to co-write a book. The plot was a futuristic theme and to be fair, even though science fiction is not the genre I choose to write in, it seemed like it was a pretty good idea. But the person that came up with the idea was first and foremost a musician and secondly he lives in Worcester and I am up here, near West Bromwich. I could not go traipsing over there all the time and he could not keep coming over here either. It just wouldn't have worked. I know what you are all thinking...'well, Missus, there is the internet.' I know that, but writing a book isn't something that you can do as a duo from email to email, it simply would not have worked. So I told him so and that was that. Though writers can get extremely frustrated at times, idea's don't always come the way the writer intends from the beginning; it is great isn't it? One of my writer friends came to visit me yesterday, and as I said to her, 'I could not give it up, not even if my life depended on it'. I have many story idea's and I am desperate to get them down on paper, or in my case computer.
The Oldbury writing group went really well last night, we almost had a full house in terms of seats and it was really good to listen to every ones stories. Every week I give an assignment. Well, I call it an assignment, it is really is just imagination prompts. It is great to listen and watch how all of the group members are blossoming every week. There is one particular member whom is making remarkable progress, as was mentioned in yesterdays group. I did not give a prompt for yesterdays group session; I wanted to listen to something they had come up with by themselves. Everyone came up with amazing stuff and there is one particular story that has stuck in my head. I find the hardest part about writing isn't having the ability to gain the attention of the reader or listener, it is keeping that attention. I am really looking forward to next weeks group. The assignment I have set is as follows, and please feel free to come up with a story of your own by using this prompt. You are at your desk at work; you get an internal email from someone in the company, but you don't recognise the email address and it has been sent anominously. The email sounds like you have a secret admirer, not interested you delete it and think nothing more about it, but then you get one the next day and then the next and the next and the next. You decide to email back and the reply is quite surprising. The story that you put to this can be anything you want, in any genre you write in. It could end up being a thriller, a romantic comedy, a horror. Whatever takes your fancy, be creative. Try to keep it within a couple of thousand words. If you are writing stories for magazines, you will know that they don't except anything too long. So this is a good way to practice writing your SHORT stories. |
